Le Jeu du Destin Antique — Feine Aufschlagkarten
“Feine Aufschlagkarten — Fortune Telling Cards”
One of the most charming and historically evocative cartomancy decks available — Le Jeu du Destin Antique (The Ancient Game of Destiny) is a 32-card vintage fortune-telling deck in the tradition of the great 19th-century European cartomancy decks. Also known as Feine Aufschlagkarten (German: “Fine Fortune-Telling Cards”), this deck is a faithful reproduction of a classic German-French cartomancy system, illustrated in a warm, detailed engraving style with hand-coloured figures in 19th-century costume — farmers, lovers, soldiers, merchants, and domestic scenes — rendered in terracottas, sage greens, dusty blues, and warm yellows on an aged cream ground, with ornate gold scrollwork borders and playing card suit indices in the upper left corner.
The 32 cards combine the pip and suit system of a standard playing card deck with richly illustrated narrative scenes. Each card carries a number at the bottom and a playing card index at the top left — clubs, hearts, diamonds, and spades — with a small vignette in the upper right corner. The scenes are extraordinary in their detail and warmth. Card 10 (King of Clubs) is a Roman soldier in a red cape and plumed helmet, spear in hand, standing in a landscape — commanding and classical. Card 8 (Eight of Hearts) is a figure in a wide-brimmed hat kneeling in a field, working the earth — labour and harvest. Card 14 (Ten of Clubs) is a courting couple — a young man in orange breeches bowing to a woman in a white apron and green dress, a flower offered between them — tender and charming. Card 13 (Ten of Clubs) is a woman in a red skirt and blue apron at a garden well, a small figure crouching beside her — domestic and atmospheric. Card 9 (Ace of Clubs) is a woman in a dark gown reclining on a red-curtained bed, a figure standing in the doorway — intimate and mysterious. Card 16 (Six of Clubs) is two figures in a boat on a river, one standing with a pole, the other seated with a basket of produce — trade and travel on the water.
The second set of six cards is equally vivid. Card 23 (Nine of Diamonds) is two women in colourful dresses dancing together on a hillside, trees behind them — joy and celebration. Card 20 (Jack of Diamonds) is a solitary figure in a green and red robe standing on a coastal path, a sailing ship on the horizon — the traveller, the messenger. Card 29 (Nine of Spades) is two figures in working clothes on a hillside, one with a rake, one crouching — labour and the land. Card 25 (Ace of Spades) is a woman in a brown cloak seated alone on a stone bench beside bare winter trees — solitude and contemplation. Card 21 (Nine of Diamonds) is a man in red and blue with a staff, a woman in a yellow dress, and a child between them in a landscape — family and journey. Card 30 (Six of Spades) is an older woman in a brown cloak walking with a child on a path, bare trees behind them, a sun and moon symbol in the upper right corner — guidance and protection.
The card backs are a clean white ground with a dense repeating pattern of eight-pointed grey stars — simple, elegant, and period-appropriate. The box is produced in two versions: the Feine Aufschlagkarten edition has a teal-green tuck box with a warm peach-orange front panel, the card back star pattern in a central oval cartouche, and Feine Aufschlagkarten — Fortune Telling Cards in bold red Art Nouveau type. The Le Jeu du Destin Antique edition has the same teal-green tuck box with a warm peach-orange front panel featuring a full-length illustration of a crowned king in a red cape — regal and atmospheric — with Le Jeu du Destin Antique in bold red Art Nouveau type above.
