The Demon-Possessed Tarot — 5th Anniversary Edition
One of the most extraordinary and genuinely unsettling tarot decks ever produced, The Demon-Possessed Tarot is a 78-card Goetia-based occult divination deck that maps the 72 demons of the Ars Goetia — the first section of the 17th-century grimoire The Lesser Key of Solomon — onto the full Rider-Waite-Smith tarot system. The result is a deck unlike anything else in the tarot world: a complete divination tool and a genuine grimoire of demonology in card form.
Every card is printed on aged parchment-effect stock with a thick matte black border, giving each one the appearance of a page torn from an ancient occult manuscript. The imagery is drawn from historical demonological engravings — the same woodcut and copperplate tradition that produced the original Goetia illustrations — rendered in fine black ink on warm sepia and ochre grounds. Each card carries the demon’s name in bold serif type, its Hebrew name in traditional script, its tarot position (Major or Minor Arcana rank and suit), its number in the Goetia, its sigil, and a description of its powers and abilities drawn directly from the original grimoire text.
Bifrons (No.46 — The Hanged Man) is depicted as a flayed anatomical figure carrying a skull — “Teaches natural and planetary sciences. Lights corpse-lights above graves and moves bodies so the souls may be stolen.” Andrealphus (No.65 — Queen of Swords) is a magnificent peacock-tailed demon — “Teaches geometry and measurements. Increases one’s intelligence. Can transform a person into a bird.” Astaroth (Justice) is a crowned, winged demon holding a serpent and a lance, seated on a dragon. Marchosias (Marchosias) is a winged wolf with a serpent tail. Phenex (Queen of Cups) is a magnificent phoenix rising from flames. Vepar (8 of Cups) is a mermaid-demon riding a sea dragon. Beelzebub (The Emperor) is a vast, bloated fly-demon. Valefor (4 of Pentacles) is a lion-headed demon. Eligor (King of Swords, No.15) is an armoured knight with bat wings and a lance.
The card backs are matte black with two large red Goetia sigil circles — dense with occult script and demonic seals — printed in deep crimson on black. The box is a deep burgundy red with the title in dark serif type and Chinese characters — The Demon-Possessed Tarot — 5th Anniversary Edition — with the subtitle “奸媽套牌之統牌” (Rare Card Set).
